Meeting of the Mangrove Thematic Group at the National Center for Environmental Research (CNRE) of the Ministry of Research in Antananarivo
On September 17, 2025, the National Center for Environmental Research (CNRE) in Antananarivo hosted a strategic meeting of the Mangrove Thematic Group (GTM) of the Malagasy Ministry of the Environment, attended by the Director General of Scientific Research of MESupReS.
National extension of MangMap
The IRD and the CNRE presented the MangMap platform, currently operational in the Mahajanga region, to Madagascan institutional stakeholders. During the meeting, the team in charge of the platform proposed organizing and implementing a joint action to extend MangMap to all of Madagascar's mangroves, mobilizing a network of committed local users for this purpose.
This presentation brought together representatives from numerous partners: FAO, WWF, Bondy, Conservation International, Madagascar National Parks, and other institutional stakeholders. The objectives of the meeting were to present the features of MangMap and discuss the integration of all mangrove coastlines into the monitoring platform. A shared action plan will need to be put in place to follow up on this proposal.
Strengthened institutional coordination
Created in February 2025, the GTM implements the National Strategy for Integrated Mangrove Ecosystem Management (SNGIM). With 390,853 hectares of mangroves recorded in 2019, it coordinates the efforts of all stakeholders with the aim of protecting and restoring them.
The introduction of MangMap into this institutional ecosystem marks a promising step forward for the sustainable management of Madagascar's mangroves, combining technological innovation and multi-stakeholder coordination in the service of these essential ecosystems.
